Our Christian spirituality calls us to not only tend to our own relationship with God but also with the world. There are many opportunities at Deer Lake United where we contribute to the world to help those in need. The following list is just some of the organizations we support throughout the year.

Burnaby YOUth Hub (formerly Edmonds Youth Resource Centre)

The Burnaby YOUth Hub is a drop-in centre that provides a safe space for at-risk youth, ages 13 to 18. Youth can access clothing, personal hygiene products, health services, hot meals, one-to-one support, crisis intervention, information, advocacy, and referral. Open during the evenings, Wednesday to Friday; call for details. 4750 Imperial Street, Burnaby. 604-569-0951

Inspired by the Christian gospel, which nurtures, empowers and liberates, First United Church is an inner city ministry of the United Church of Canada. Called by the Spirit to be a part of the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver this ministry: affirms the worth of individuals, empowers communities, and works for social justice. Deer Lake continues to be a drop off depot for First United (9 am to 1 pm Tuesday to Friday). Of special need continues to be men’s clothing, socks, footwear, blankets and sleeping bags.

The Dixon Transition Society had its genesis over 25 years ago in our church basement. Wenda Erickson, a psychiatric nurse and member of the church, raised the church’s awareness to the needs of women and their families fleeing abusive homes. This ministry began providing support and resources out of our little church and has now grown significantly. Dixon House is now located in the Burnaby neighbourhood and provides safe, secure, temporary accommodation for women and their children who are fleeing abuse. They offer support, information, and referrals.

Founded in 2011, BASES is dedicated to building strong foundations for children, youth and families in Burnaby through the work of BASES Family Thrift Store and program partnerships with schools in Burnaby and New Westminster. Its vision is to be a community where all children, youth, and families are able to develop strong foundations for an independent, positive future.

The Society To End Homelessness In Burnaby has been established by the multi-stakeholder Burnaby Task Force On Homelessness to build sustainability, to provide leadership in the reduction and ultimately, resolution of homelessness in Burnaby. The Burnaby Task Force On Homelessness continues as an activity within the Society.
